Medea Benjamin & Vijay Prashad
On September 11, 2001 the world changed with the attack on the World Trade Center towers. Now on the 20th anniversary of that fateful day, Vijay Prashad and Medea Benjamin discuss the international and domestic consequences of that fateful day. It immediately led to the War on Terror and the further militarization of the imperial role of the United States and the destabilization of the Middle East. At the same time it promoted a fortress America mentality and fear of Moslems (later extended by Trump to Mexican and Central American immigrants). It led to a surveillance state and limitation of civil liberties. It fed a growing military-industrial-
Congressional- media complex. And on and on to where we find ourselves today.Yet, much of this was not that new. It was a continuation and acceleration of trends that had long been underway.
What we do The Center engages in local community support and outreach to promote and advance initiatives and movements toward social justice, grassroots empowerment and democracy, and environmental sustainability. It is also devoted to critical analysis of the processes and impacts of globalization, both local and international. The Center works to develop alternative socio-economic systems that conserve and share the world’s cultural, economic, and environmental resources for the benefit of humankind.
