Travel with us to the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC for a virtual/online tour of their amazing collection of President and First Lady portraits.

The National Portrait Gallery is a historic art museum between 7th, 9th, F, and G Streets NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Founded in 1962 and opened to the public in 1968, it is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Its collections focus on images of famous Americans. The museum is housed in the historic Old Patent Office Building, as is the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Presidential Portraits

The nation’s only complete collection of presidential portraits outside the White House, this exhibition lies at the heart of the Portrait Gallery’s mission to tell the American story through the individuals who have shaped it.

Ever since George Washington became President in 1789, the presidency has been a major focus of American political life, and as with nearly everything associated with that office, presidential portraits have from the outset attracted considerable popular interest.

Please note that the Smithsonian’s Presidential Portraits exhibit does not officially include the First Ladies. However, our program will include some of the museum’s FIrst Ladies portraits that are held in their collection.

The Smithsonian’s Presidential Portraits exhibit only includes the portraits of Presidents that have left office. For example, the portrait of President Obama was not added to the collection until February 2018: https://npg.si.edu/exhibition/obama-portraits-unveiled

Our program will also only include previous Presidents – at least until after the election/inauguration.

Your host for this program is Robert Kelleman, the founder/director of the non-profit community organization Washington, DC History & Culture. Robert earned an art history degree from the University of Michigan, spent the first two years of his career at the Detroit Institute of Arts and has visited numerous art museums throughout the world. Robert has led numerous tours of the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum / National Portrait Gallery.

This educational and entertaining program is open to all regardless of age, geographic location, etc. and since it is an online/virtual event via Zoom you can connect from anywhere in the world.

This is a FREE program – voluntary donations accepted to support our non-profit community programs.

Zoom events have a limit on the number of people that can participate and therefore the event may “sell-out” once a certain number of registrations has been reached.

Login info will emailed approximately 8-24 hours prior to the event to those that registered through the Eventbrite.com (link via Facebook) or Meetup.com web sites.

Please note that clicking “Interested” or “Going” on the Facebook event posting is not a formal registration – you have to click “Tickets” or similar on Facebook to be transferred to Eventbrite.com (Facebook’s ticketing site) to actually register.

If you’ve successfully registered you’ll receive an email confirmation from Eventbrite or Meetup.

If you haven’t received the Zoom connection an hour before the event feel free to contact us.

This is a visual presentation so the bigger device screen that you can use the better.
