The Road to Human Rights: Father Alejandro Solalinde and the Defense of Migrants

    By Signe Hammer

Father Alejandro Solalinde is the founding director of the migrant shelter Hermanos en el Camino, Brothers on the Road, in Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca—near the tracks on which the freight train called “The Beast”  has brought thousands of the Central American migrants whose rights he tenaciously defends. On Tuesday, Jan 21, at 6:30 PM in the second-floor auditorium of the Bellas Artes, with his collaborator, Mexican journalist Karla María Gutiérrez, he’ll discuss his work and his book, Revelations of a Missionary: My Itinerant Life.

On the road, migrants are subject to extortion, assault, rape, kidnapping, trafficking, torture and murder. The Hermanos en el Camino shelter offers them humanitarian aid: food, shelter, medical and psychological help and legal guidance. For his efforts, Padre Solalinde has himself been threatened by organizations that profit from migrants; at one point, he briefly left Mexico. He has said that his greatest challenge “is the intimidation, the harassment, and the constant lack of respect from people who do not want my work helping migrants to succeed. Many local authorities, gangs, and drug traffickers would love to free themselves from the defenders of human rights.”

Nominated for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, Father Solalinde has won numerous awards for his work, most recently the 2019 Dutch Geuzenpenning in recognition of his long fight for democracy and human rights.

Karla María Gutiérrez, with whom Father Solalinde collaborated on his book, is an award-winning journalist, writer and radio commentator who has also worked as a screenwriter and producer. She is currently researching a book on migration, human rights, trafficking, child labor, gender based violence and femicide.

This lecture will feature live translation.

San Miguel PEN is a chapter of PEN International, the organization of writers that fights for freedom of expression around the world.
