Imperialism in the Global South: Africa and Latin America

David Barkin, Patrick Bond & Ana Garcia

The developing face of imperialism today can be seen in the global South. The power of transnational corporations and financial capital buttressed by multinational institutions, is immense. All this is played out through imperialist/subimperialist relations between states, geopolitical tensions, internal political processes including the threats of neofascism, the uneven world economic crisis, inequality, and specific sectoral crises (Covid-19 vaccines, climate policy, food sovereignty, etc). How might the Biden neolib/neocon orientation differ from Trump’s paleoconservative politics?

Patrick Bond is Professor of Government at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and Honorary Professor of Geography, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He is author of Looting Africa

Ana Garcia is Assistant Professor at the International Relations Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil. Along with Patrick Bond, she has edited BRICS: an anti-capitalist critique.

David Barkin is Profesor Distinguido at Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana- Unidad Xochimilco, Ciudad de México. His latest book is De la Protesta a la Propuesta: 50 años imaginando y construyendo El Futuro
