En gustos se rompen géneros. Tastes differ and break all definitions. Is this the proud “ catch of the day”? Is everything really tastier smothered in ant eggs? Dichos and the fusion of cuisines and cultures in Mexico. Fusion, not confusion!
Cuisines all over the world have incorporated ingredients and customs from other cultures and Mexico is no exception. Some foods were survival quality, eaten in families during times of hardship. Some families had more abundance and other preferences. Social classes often defined what one ate, as happens today. Some creatures that were consumed are now on the endangered species list. Tastes differ and evolve. En gustos se rompen generos.
San Miguel native author of The Buen Provecho Book, Patricia Merrill Márquez, will once again entertain guests with a talk on Humor and Surprises in Mexican Cooking and Culture.
Tidbits of history and linguistics, Mexican culture and humor, are stirred into family anecdotes and stories to share amusing culinary “dichos”, expressions related to “the Mexican way of thinking”.
What do Otomi families still prepare today? What do typical middle-class Mexican families eat? What do families of modern Spanish descent prefer? Many other cultures contributed to present day Mexican cuisine: indigenous groups as well as the Spaniards, French, Germans, Austrians, Chinese, Arabs and Italians. Linguistics and cultural differences have played their part in the evolution of recipes. Patricia’s research has been both academic and first hand direct from her own experiences and from a family history of many generations in San Miguel on her mother’s side. Her American dad arrived on the GI bill in 1946.
