The breathtakingly beautiful art created deep inside the caves in Upper Paleolithic times from over 70,000 years ago provokes awe and wonder.  How did this major — arguably the most major — transition into becoming what we call human, come about?  What do these symbols and animals tell us about the nature of our ancestral mind?  What are some of the interpretations as to how this phenomenon came into existence?  As the era of hunting and gathering started to pass away, permanent built forms came into being over thousands of years.  When writing came into existence, around 6,000 – 4,000 BCE, the Prehistoric era by definition was over but its effects continued through history.

Raymond Stern has practiced and taught architectural design and history for over 50 years in Europe, Southeast Asia, the US, and Canada, where he lives.  He graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College, London, England.  Raymond has given his adult education courses at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico;  McGill University in Montreal; the University of Massachusetts in Boston; and Carleton University in Ottawa.
