“What is the link between madness and art?” asks Amélie Ravalec, director of the acclaimed new documentary Art & Mind, released earlier this year, and about to have its Mexican premiere on Friday, December 6, at 6:30 pm, as part of a three-day international congress at the Hotel Real de Minas, Ancha de San Antonio 1.

For Ravalec, a London-based filmmaker and artist, the question could not adequately be explored without considerable research. And her research was prodigious: Ravalec examined 368 works of art depicting madness, from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century, and conducted extensive interviews, in English and French, with twenty-five experts.

Ravalec studied “L’Extraction de la pierre de folie,” (Excision of the Stone of Madness), a 1494 painting by Hieronymus Bosch that, she says, “satirizes the medical quacks of the time, but also considers the physical origins of insanity.” By the 19th Century, with the discovery of the unconscious and the development of medical science to treat insanity, she adds, “one sees many Romantic painters inspired by the subject of madness,” among them Henry Fuseli, William Bouguereau, and Théodore Géricault.

The filmmaker’s exploration was not confined to museum artwork, but also included works created by patients in the Sainte-Anne psychiatric hospital.

The European release of the documentary was greeted with rave reviews. The noted British publication Raw Vision commented: “Amélie Ravalec’s dazzling film Art & Mind is an unparalleled chronicle, a journey into haunting, haunted places, which will fascinate and captivate both experts in the field and those for whom its themes are less familiar.”

Art & Mind is in English and French, and will be presented with both English and Spanish subtitles. Tickets for the film are 150 pesos, and can be purchased by clicking either of the “Buy Tickets Online” buttons in this email newsletter; or online at boletocity.com; or for cash or card at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

The movie premiere is a feature of the December 6 to December 8 bilingual congress Sanando desde el Inconsciente – “Healing from the Unconscious” – being held the Hotel Real de Minas. This congress will include workshops and conferences, some in English, some in Spanish, all with simultaneous translation from one language to the other, presented by experts with training from the United States, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Mexico.

The experts at this year’s conference include Ph.D. cultural historian, psychotherapist, and somatic educator Anngwyn St. Just; Don Lauro de la Cruz, authority on Mayan and Tibetan exercises to connect with the power of the unconscious; David Eric Pressault, a Jungian analyst from Canada with a background in the arts; family constellation therapist Marco Navarro; dreamwalker Aberdeem; astrologer Hector Jimenez; and neuropsychologist Jannet Ruiz.

A universal ticket for the entire conference (including the movie premiere) is 6,300 pesos, and can be purchased at Boleto City or online HERE. Individual tickets are also available for Anngwyn St. Just (600 pesos per event), and Don Lauro de la Cruz (600 pesos).
