The “Buena Vista Social Club” was a members’ club in Havana, Cuba in the 1940s; the club held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play. In the1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity. The album went to on to become a worldwide phenomenon, helping to introduce Cuba’s rich musical heritage and pre-revolutionary past.

Shelter presents the groundbreaking documentary Buena Vista Social Club. Ry Cooder gathered together some of the greatest names from the history of Cuban music, some as old as their nineties, to collaborate on the best-selling album. According to Boulder Weekly, “The music is incredible enough on its own – but the lives and the culture behind it, that’s what makes this documentary a must-see!”
