“Al Mundo le Falta un Tornillo” – The World Has a Screw Loose – is both a widely held opinion nowadays, and the title of a lively Argentinean tango.  The song, originally recorded in 1932, will be the opening number of a special benefit concert of tangos and other Spanish-language songs at Bellas Artes, featuring Argentinean tenor Pablo Buniak and Mexican pianist Alberto Macedo, with guest dancers Eduardo Delgado and Fabiola Zapien, at 7pm on Friday, November 15.

What’s special about this concert is not merely the exceptional talent of the performers – more about them in a moment – but its manner of presentation.  All seventeen of the songs on the program will be performed with projected supertitles in English.

The best songs are stories set to music – stories of love, loss, joy, despair, and hope.  A song well performed can become a theatrical as well as a musical experience, provided you can understand the words.  This past January, a supertitled concert at the San Miguel Playhouse featuring Buniak and Macedo won raves from the English-speaking audience members.   Michael Dobbin, a Canadian theater director, said afterward, “I have heard some of these songs many times in the past, but now I feel a connection to them I never had before.”  He added, “This was one of the best events I have ever attended in San Miguel.”

From the biting lyrics of “Al Mundo le Falta un Tornillo,” to the amorous yearning of “Volver,” to the dreamy invocation of “Youkali” (a tango with music by Kurt Weill), the songs chosen by Buniak and Macedo should touch everyone in the audience.  The performers are calling their one-night-only show Tango y Otras Canciones de Amor y Desamor (“Tango and Other Songs of Love and Heartbreak”).  The songs being performed in this concert are different from the ones performed in January.

Alberto Macedo is a world-class pianist who got discovered as the resident pianist at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City, entertaining the likes of Madonna and Luciano Pavarotti at private parties.  He has gone on to perform widely in Latin America and Europe.  Buniak, for his part, is a recipient of Argentina’s prestigious Estella de Mar award, and an internationally known artist.

The concert will be this year’s sixth edition of the Steinway Series, benefit concerts for Libros para Todos, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring children in Mexico to read more.  All Steinway Series concerts feature the Bellas Artes’ nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano, and have become known for maintaining a high level of performance quality.  This year’s previous concerts featured, among other musicians, Mark Hartman, Lady Zen, David Mendoza, Fidel Leal, Don Krim, Ken Bichel, and Lorelei Capell.

Reserved-seat tickets are 300 pesos for the first six rows of the auditorium, 200 pesos for the middle six rows, and 100 pesos (50 pesos for students) for the back six rows. Tickets may be purchased online by clicking either of the “Buy Tickets Online” buttons in this email newsletter; or at boletocity.com; or for cash or credit/debit card at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.
