!QUE BARBARA! Ever wonder what this means? You hear it a lot around here…It is a positive and dramatic exclamation in our local Mexican culture, and for good reason. It tells the world of your amazement and appreciation. When you see something fabulous and unusual, say “Que Barbara!”

St Barbara’s Day is December 4th, and in honor of the day, Barbara Poole, hostess at Casa de la Noche Bed and Breakfast, invites ALL BARBARAS of San Miguel de Allende to celebrate around the Fountain Patio of this fun, historic, former bordello.

There is a vivid legend about this obscure saint. Apparently, Saint Barbara was a maiden of great beauty whose father locked her in a tower to remove her from many ardent suitors who were not to his liking. He also wanted to keep her from indulging in a habit of constantly helping the poor. He later beheaded her as she refused to give up her Christian faith.

Did you know Saint Barbara wears a crown made of bricks, a reminder of the tower where she was imprisoned by her father? Also, Saint Barbara holds a lighted torch in her right hand as a reminder of the torches that went out when her would-be punishers approached her with them.

Saint Barbara is often portrayed with miniature chains and a tower. As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Barbara continues to be a popular saint in modern times, best known as the patron saint of armorers, artillerymen, military engineers, firemen, miners, and others who work with explosives (think fireworks!) because of her legend’s association with lightning, and also of mathematicians.

This is a party just for Barbaras – first name, middle name, nickname or tattooed on your arm. We will gather in the outdoor courtyard. Bring your favorite botanas. Barbara Poole will provide her famous ‘barbaritas’ – even better than margaritas!
