Many people in San Miguel have still not caught onto the new incarnation of hospice care now available in the home to all residents of San Miguel de Allende, and we want to be sure that changes soon!

But first, not everyone knows what the word “hospice” means. Hospice services (also called palliative care) are provided, often in the home, for a patient with a diagnosis of a terminal illness, usually with an expectation of six months or less to live. Many such patients would much prefer to be cared for in their homes instead of in a hospital hooked up to tubes and monitors, but the family may be ill equipped to provide the necessary care, particularly if there are complicated symptoms. That is the why of hospice care.

    Here is the how:
A coordinated and trained team with a doctor, a nurse, a social worker, often augmented by trained volunteers, help the family to assess the patient’s needs and help access caregivers with the expertise to control pain and other symptoms and calm fears and confusion—basically to keep the patient as alert and pain-free as possible for as long as possible and to help the family to
understand and weather the transitions they will make. The team also contains
spiritual workers of whatever tradition the family prefers.

Welcome to Hospice Care by Mitigare
The word Mitigare is Latin for alleviate, calm, or ease, as in easing pain and symptoms. San Miguel now has an official AC (non-profit) organization staffed by trained professionals to provide such care in the home of any patient in the municipality, Mexican or expat, who desires it. The care is provided on a sliding-scale fee schedule, based on ability to pay. (Funds are always being sought to provide care for those patients who cannot afford to pay the full cost, so that no one is turned away.) Mitigare provides all necessary medical equipment, such as hospital beds and oxygen concentrators, thanks to a generous grant from Rotary Midday and a Rotary chapter in the US.

Hospice Care by Mitigare has just received a US$4,500 grant from the Shaaron Kent Foundation, which will allow us to send our nurses and social workers, all with postgraduate training in hospice care, for additional training at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (National Cancer Institute), or INCAN, in Mexico City, which will further strengthen their capacity to serve the San Miguel community and strengthen our ties with INCAN.

    Celebrate with Mitigare at Mixta
Now for the fun part… Everyone is invited to a great event with music, color, crafts, and food to celebrate and support hospice care by Mitigare. Our favorite renowned local guitarist, Gil Gutierrez, will entertain us, and Mixta will donate 10 percent of the proceeds of that day’s sales to hospice. Come join the fun at Mixta, at Pila Seca 3, on February 26 from 2 to 5pm, and learn more about hospice care in San Miguel. Entrance is free, although donations are accepted.

Our staff are professionals specialized in caring for people who have a life-limiting illness. We address the patient’s needs – physical, emotional, social and spiritual – as well as the needs of the whole family, and help the patients make decisions about how and where they want to spend the rest of their lives.

    About us

Our Mission is to enhance the quality of life of individuals with life-limiting illness and support their families through the management of physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, helping the patient to remain comfortable, until death occurs naturally and peacefully.

Mitigare, Palliative Care is an A.C. organization, a non-profit private association under Mexican law, whose aim is to serve all the citizens of San Miguel de Allende, not only in the urban areas, but in the small communities of the area, with trained and sensitive personnel specialized in home care for any patient who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness or state of health and a life expectancy of 6 months or less.
