LIFELONG LEARNING: Critical Thinking – Errors in Thinking are not Random

Instructor Alan Gilchrist writes, “A survey of (errors in thinking), drawn from social, developmental, and cognitive psychology reveals a general pattern involving egocentrism. There is a general self-serving bias; thinking is distorted in the direction of the way we would like things to be.”

Surely this helps us understand how the polarization of our current era works.  Too many of us, of all political persuasions, tend to process information in self-reinforcing ways.  But does it have to be so?  Gilchrist will help us consider how we and others can move toward critical thinking.  Lots of people praise critical thinking in abstract terms. But how does it happen when we seem to prefer thinking that reinforces our existing theories and biases?

Alan Gilchrist is an emeritus professor of psychology at Rutgers University, Newark Campus, and taught visual perception and critical thinking for 45 years. He is a consulting editor for the journal Perception. He has delivered invited lectures at over 90 universities around the world.
