Tango: A Therapy for Brain and Body
    By Christina Johnson

I have been a psychotherapist and a massage therapist for many years. When I first discovered tango, I realized that I was receiving benefits regarding both my physical and emotional health. My posture became taller and more elegant and I felt confident, graceful and feminine in my body.

After a few years I started a tango business and also began teaching tango.

In 2012 I suffered an accident during a spinal surgery and was told I might be able to walk, but would probably never dance again. The Tango Therapy class was created by using exercises that were developed from movements in tango dance, as well as other gentle movements I found helpful in my recovery. I hoped that I could help others who had physical limitations to regain the joy of movement, musicality, and fluidity that tango brings, and so I started this class

with excellent teacher/dancer Ezequiel Eli Agreda Peinado to offer a needed service in our town.

Tango is an elusive and magical dance. Some comments I have heard share the sense that when one becomes involved with it, it is no longer the dance that is important but the beautiful feeling inherent in it. Tango is a feeling that is danced, Tango is a secret danced between two people. Tango is a walking embrace.

Robert Duvall said: “The beginning and the end of the tango is the walk.” The walk-in tango is the most difficult part. It improves our posture because it depends on our core strength. The fluidity and power of our movement depends on our awareness of our bodies.

Yes, we learn to walk with grace and awareness in our class. In completing the short five-class series, students learn to appreciate listening to music, to move with intention, to coordinate feet and walking to musical beat, the basic sequence of tango steps, and how to move fluidly in a complex turn. Students may expect to practice ten minutes a day at home.

No matter if you are a visual, auditory, kinesthetic or intuitive learner, all are included in our study of tango. Tango takes listening skills, and stretches your brain to coordinate rhythm, and distinguish it from melody. You will start listening, and moving to music as the heart releases endorphins and soothes the body. The class is in English with Spanish translation when needed. Teachers: Christina Johnson and Ezequiel Eli Agreda Peinado. Call to PRE-REGISTER:154-9085 or send an enquiry.   Class Tuesdays Nov. 26, Dec.3,10, 17, 31 at 10:15 AM at the Pure Fitness Studio on Stirling Dickinson street, a few doors down from Hotel Real de Minas. 120 pesos a class or 500 for five classes prepaid. Free half-hour private class for pre-registered students paying the 5 class series.
