EURYTHMY – New art of movement

Rudolf Steiner, in the early twentieth century, inaugurated the concept of eurythmy and defined it as an art movement that becomes visible in space and through what body movement inside the human being goes through word and music. Eurythmy is not merely choreographic or subjective but is the expression of an objective reality underlying the mostly subconscious processes that shape, maintain, and regenerate the human physical body. The unique skills, potentials and ingenuities in the evolution of man are mediated not only by one sort of quality, let’s say mechanical, chemical or physical, but also on spiritual processes and systems as a part of human nature that we may look upon as “structures” or “members” of the human being. Eurythmy is much more related to these higher functions of the human body and consciousness than, let´s say: sports or dancing and through this higher affinity to the spiritual dimensions of man, Eurythmy has great potential to exert very decisive therapeutic effects, especially in the growing up of children, but also in the battle against growing old and degenerate in the later biography of man.

Eurythmy works with humans through the vital body, which are actually formative processes in correspondence with our consciousness, represented by the “Macro-Cosmos”, which is traditionally related to as the “Zodiac”, continuously modified by the configurations and movements of the Planets, connecting

human nature as the “Micro-Cosmos” to the universe. Because its meaning and substance is cosmic and universal, Eurythmy can be expressed in many, virtually limitless, and always creative ways. A lifetime of moving Eurythmy is like drinking from the water of eternal life. (BLB)
