  • The H-Word

    Tuesday, January 14, 9:30am

Los Arcos, Stirling Dickinson, next to the yellow caboose

Jane Doe is suffering from cancer. It started in her liver and has now spread to her lungs and embedded in her bones. The chemo and radiation are not helping. But her doctor has yet to bring up hospice – the “H word” so many don’t want to hear. We live in a death-denying culture when we don’t want to accept our own mortality. Often, patients wait until a doctor mentions end-of-life before they’ll even begin to wrap their minds around it. But if patients don’t ask, doctors may continue to search out treatment options, even if a cure is unlikely.

In San Miguel de Allende, we are fortunate to have a relatively new Hospice called Mitigare Cuidados Paliativos. Mitigare has one of the very few certified palliative and hospice care doctors in Mexico serving as medical director. Dra. Maria de Lourdes Tejeida Bautista trained at the National Institute of Cancer and has the breadth of experience necessary to provide quality of life care for persons with terminal illnesses.

Previous attempts at hospice failed for lack of medical expertise, availability of medications and unsustainable business plans. Mitigare is fortunate to be able to harvest the good from the past attempts and integrate that into a business model that works. Mitigare operates on a sliding scale basis that allows anyone, regardless of capacity to pay, to receive end of life care from the Mitigare team.

The Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende is pleased to present a special presentation about Mitigare Cuidados Paliativos on Tuesday, January 14th. You’ll learn why this model of Hospice is working and why that is important for Mexico. Mitigare is the only home care hospice in Mexico. Our speaker will be fellow Rotarian Lee Carter who is the President of the Board of Directors as well as a cofounder of the organization.
The Midday Club of San Miguel de Allende meets every Tuesday. Doors open at 9AM, the meeting begins at 9:30AM. We’re located at Los Arcos at #27 Sterling Dickenson.
