The relationship between the US and the European Union has always been complicated and riddled with disagreement. Will we see a long-term deterioration of this relationship? Today, a mix of internal and external pressures on this relationship is growing. For instance, while the EU values the many international institutions built under American leadership after WWII such as the UN and NATO, the US seems to find these less and less useful. Also, in the strategic competition with powers such as Russia and China the US and EU are divided. On the other hand, the two are each other’s biggest trading partners and share many common values. But is that enough to uphold strong transatlantic ties?
While leaders continue to grapple with the effects of this complicated relationship, the Mid Day Club of San Miguel de Allende will present unique insight at our regular Zoom meeting this Tuesday at 9:30. Our guest speaker is Copenhagen resident Iben Tybjaerg Schacke Barfoed. Ms. Schacke-Barfoed is Danish Parliament Secretary to the European Affairs Committee. The talk will center on the immediate consequences for the EU and US, and an analysis of the potential long term consequences.
Tybjaerg Schacke Barfoed holds a Masters in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen. Her experience includes Assistant to Danish MEP Bertel Haarder, European Parliament 1999-2001. Researcher in EU Affairs at the Danish Institute for International Studies 2002-2003. Program Coordinator for EU studies at DIS Study Abroad 2002-2007. Danish Parliament since 2007 as EU Adviser and Clerk to the European Affairs Committee. 2017-2018 Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs EU department.Join us Tuesday, September 29th at 9:30AM for this most informative presentation via Zoom video conference.
