Anyone living in Mexico is familiar with the county’s reputation of being overrun by violence and the drug cartels’ firm grip on Mexican life.  This week’s guest speaker at the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende will provide unique insight into this scourge which poses an ongoing threat to business and government.

Dr. James Creechan has been a close observer of Mexico and its place in North America for several decades. He is uniquely qualified to speak about Mexican Cartels and drug violence having had an extensive teaching and research career in all three countries of North America. In 1998 he began a 14-year relationship with professors and students in the Faculty of International Studies and Public Policy at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa in Culiacan. While in Culiacan, he began monitoring Mexican Drug Cartels after realizing that almost all of the major cartel leaders had deep roots and connections to Culiacan and Sinaloa.

Over the years, Dr. Creechan has taught graduate courses and mentored many Mexican students who went on to earn PhDs and undertake research and teach at Mexican Universities. He brings a sociological perspective that focuses on transnational crime and policy issues. After his early retirement from the University of Alberta, he continued to teach and do research at several Ontario Universities. The seminars in the Sociology Department at the University of Guelph (Ontario) serve as the basis for his forthcoming 2021 book titled “Narco Cartels: Drug Wars and Covert Netherworlds”

Plan to attend this Tuesday’s virtual meeting, January 26th starting at 9:30AM.  Go to the Midday Rotary Club website at www.rotarysmamidday.org and sign up.  You’ll receive an email with instructions on being a part of this weeks meeting.  Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change.
