Maturity has its rewards. At 18 years old, Jóvenes Adelante now stands as one of San Miguel de Allende’s leading, sustainable and respected non-profits. We have supported 180 students through university degrees, have 80 more in process, hope to take on 25 more from a strong field of current would-be JA scholars, and maintain our notable graduation rate of 85%.

Our thriving team includes: board members who both set policy and do enormous amounts of work, staff who keep us functioning, mentors who make sure our students are nourished every step of the way, committed sponsors who financially support those students, other volunteers, an invaluable set of partners including Amistad Canada and UUFSMA, and finally a committed, growing graduate network.

At our 18th Annual General Meeting you will have a chance to meet many members of the Jóvenes Adelante’s family, including available students and graduates; to share and celebrate the year we’ve had; and to find out what is coming next! It is a chance to hear about accomplishments and new challenges, to ask questions in person, and to make suggestions about how we can better serve you over the coming year.  We count on your supportive presence and fresh ideas to help us be a truly responsive and accountable organization; so please join us!

This year we will bid farewell to a couple of board members who have dedicated so much time, effort and love to JA and our students; we will welcome new board members; and we will celebrate Sue Leonard’s service of so many years to JA — especially her return as President when Robin Loving departed. Sue will continue on as Past President.

After the meeting we’ll have refreshments, cake, and you’ll have a chance to meet everyone including students and graduates, and to find out more information about how to become involved if you are new to JA! We hope to see you there.

    Don Krim
    President-Elect

Jóvenes Adelante  provides scholarships and other essential support to young Mexican university students facing economic adversity so that they may acquire the academic and life skills necessary to foster positive social and economic change in their society. Since 2001 Jóvenes Adelante has helped nearly 200 students obtain university degrees. Our standards are high. Through a rigorous screening process – including two interviews, one with the applicant’s family – the brightest and most financially challenged students are identified and assessed. Successful applicants are funded for the entirety of their university studies (four or five years).

Financial Support – Each student receives $126,800 pesos over five years of university. Mentoring – Our mentors help their students throughout their university studies. They often develop strong and enduring relationships. Mentors, both Mexican nationals and expatriates serve as combination coach, cheerleader, sounding board and advisor who may also help the student obtain needed services. Tutoring – Our volunteers actively provide English coaching.
Like-skills workshops – These workshops cover topics ranging from resume writing and interviewing to nutrition and financial management. They help students develop skills critical to both personal and professional success. Counseling  –  Our team of professionals meet individually with students who are facing life challenges such as family crises, financial difficulties, and academic issues. The counselors enable students to overcome these challenges and successfully complete their academic programs. Computers – We work with partner organizations to assure that every student has a modern laptop computer.
