Join Audubon de Mexico for a birdwalk on Saturday, October 8th, where we’ll be counting birds for science during Global Big Day weekend. We’ll be traveling to La Huerta, located below the Allende Dam, where the deep canyon habitat attracts a number of different species as compared to the upper sections of the Rio Laja. For instance, in May we spotted Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, a small flycatcher with a distinctive loud call. We also saw Blue Mockingbirds, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Rufous-backed Robin and several species of Orioles. Overall, 35 species were counted in May.

This trip will be led by Luke Rich, Norman Besman and Bob Graham, seasoned birders with a wealth of knowledge. The area where we will be birding is one of the healthiest sections of the Rio Laja, with abundant water flowing in the river’s channel and a variety of trees along its banks, which makes for great bird habitat.

Our access point is the property of Luis Franke, owner of Franke’s Vivero/Vivero Maguey.  There will be a little time for perusing the large nursery, which includes a fantastic selection of succulents (great for pollinators) available for purchase.

We’ll have spotting scopes to view the birds up close and binoculars to lend if you need them.  Sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, layered clothing are recommended.  Don’t forget your water!  Our guides to the Birds of San Miguel and Butterflies of San Miguel will be available for purchase at 100 pesos each.

This outing is limited to 12 participants, pre-registration is required.
