Come Help Save the Trees of Guadiana Park and Honor the Memory of Bud Phillips

After five years of restoration, Guadiana Park is now one of the most beautiful parks in San Miguel. Everyone, whether sitting, strolling, playing or walking their dogs, loves the park’s trees, for their beauty and their shade. But many of those trees are infested with la plaga—ball moss and mistletoe that, if not removed, will kill them.

To save the trees, and honor the late Bud Phillips, a key figure in the park restoration project, the Friends of Guadiana Park are holding their First Annual Spring Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 3 from 6-8 PM at the beautiful Guadiana home of Lesley Lustgarten.

An enthusiastic gardener, Bud was a founding member of the Friends of Guadiana Park steering committee. He helped plan the restoration of the then-largely derelict park, and was instrumental in restoring its plants. Known for his easygoing ways and sense of humor, he spent every Saturday morning in the park, weeding, transplanting and watering. He kept up the work until his health failed, and his greatest wish was to see the park thrive.

Enter the fundraiser, where you can support the park as you meet and greet friends and neighbors and enjoy tacos, white wine, beer and soft drinks to mellow gypsy guitar music by Javier Estrada. A silent auction features jewelry by Bill Harris, a kayaking trip for up to 8 adults from Amigos de la Presa, a cooking class for two with Chef Gaby Green, an exclusive travel consultation with Rex Fritschi, and—perfect for a teenage grandchild—a one-of-a-kind skateboard from Eric Lustgarten of San Miguel Skateboards.

So far this year, the Friends of Guadiana Park have had the 150-year-old Mesquite trees thoroughly cleaned and trimmed just in time for them to leaf out and bud into their spring finery. You can practically see them breathe in relief.

But there are a lot more trees in the park that need attention, including spraying for spider mites that are killing our beautiful Red Cedars and Italian Cypresses. Tree specialist Rob Johnston and his crews are doing a great job, but skilled work doesn’t come cheap.

Tickets for our April 3 Fundraiser will be on sale in Guadiana Park each Saturday from 10:00 am until noon.

Todos, ya sea sentados, paseando, jugando o paseando a sus perros, aman los árboles del parque, por su belleza y su sombra. Pero muchos de esos árboles están infestados con la plaga, paixtle y muérdago que, si no se eliminan, los matará.

Para salvar los árboles y honrar al fallecido Bud Phillips, una figura clave en el proyecto de restauración del parque, Amigos de Parque Guadiana realizará su primera recaudación de fondos anual de primavera el miércoles 3 de abril de 6 a 8 pm, En la hermosa casa de Lesley Lustgarten en Guadiana.

Jardinero entusiasta, Bud fue miembro fundador del comité directivo de Amigos de Parque Guadiana. Ayudó a planificar la restauración del entonces abandonado parque, y fue fundamental para restaurar sus plantas. Conocido por sus maneras relajadas y su sentido del humor, pasaba todos los sábados por la mañana en el parque, escardando, trasplantando y regando. Mantuvo el trabajo hasta que su salud falló, y su mayor deseo era ver que el parque prosperara.

En lo que va del año, los Amigos del Parque Guadiana han limpiado y recortado a fondo los árboles deMesquite, de 150 años de edad, justo a tiempo para que salgan y broten en sus galas de primavera. Prácticamente puedes verlos respirar de alivio.

Pero hay muchos más árboles en el parque que necesitan atención, incluida la fumigación de ácaros que están matando a nuestros hermosos cedros rojos y cipreses italianos. El especialista en árboles Rob Johnston y sus cuadrillas están haciendo un gran trabajo, pero el trabajo especializado no es barato.
