  • Open House Honors Ceramic Artist

“Breathtaking!” “Gorgeous colors!” “Exquisite brushwork!” “Stunning!” “Such intricate detail!”

These are some of the comments viewers made about the ceramic work of the father and son team, both named Angel Ortiz, when they exhibited their work at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, They were among the most popular artists at this large world market. “They created quite a sensation,” said Mayer Shacter, who helped them to apply for the fair, and accompanied them to Santa Fe. “Their work is so unusual, and so beautiful, it was almost flying out of their booth.”

This work will be featured at Galeria Atotonilco’s Open House, September 29 and 30, from noon to 5 PM both days. The gallery has been collecting Ortiz’s work for twelve years and exhibits the largest and most representative selection available anywhere.

The Ortiz’s work within the tradition of burnished ceramics that goes back to pre-Hispanic times in the town of Tonala, near Guadalajara, but they have expanded their designs, their surface decorations, and their range of colors to create a unique statement. Any one of their pieces is a singular work of art. The Ortizs have been widely rewarded for their innovations, winning competitions, and selling work to major collections.

“If these were paintings,” says gallery owner Shacter, “they would be thousands of dollars, but ceramics is still reasonably priced.” A ceramic artist himself for twenty-seven years, Shacter has a keen eye for the best of the folk potters working today, and loves to support those who are still active. “There is no logical reason that exquisite paintings on a pot should be any less valued than work on a canvas, but for collectors or those decorating a home, the affordability of folk art is great news.”

    The Gallery Setting

Galeria Atotonilco is a 6000 sq. ft. showroom, filled with a huge variety of folk art, photographs, country antique furniture, and a spectacular collection of decorative blown glass. It is located five miles north of town on eight lush acres in a much-published architecturally interesting building. It’s near the historic church in the village of Atotonilco, Nirvana restaurant, and La Gruta hot springs, making a trip to the gallery a nice excuse for a day in the country, or easily accessible for a quick trip. The gallery is normally open by appointment only (415-153-5365), so the open house is an opportunity to visit it without an appointment.

Mexican folk art is one of the liveliest and most abundant folk art traditions anywhere in the world. Mexican folk art remains highly regional, with specific areas producing only one type of the Mexican crafts, such as Huichol art, Mexican pottery, Mexican lacquer art, Mexican papel mache, and Mexican serapes. Our gallery features most of these geographical areas and all of these types of folk art, many of which are Mexican antiques. We emphasize the exquisite Tonala pottery and vintage serapes, but we carry a wide variety of fine Mexican crafts. Because we live in Mexico, we have many resources and can suggest and help you find any Mexican crafts you desire to furnish or decorate your home or office. Mexican folk art blends beautifully with many decorative motifs, from modern to traditional. It can give your home or office a distinctive, colorful flair without looking at all like a Mexican folk art gallery.

We are serious about Mexican folk art!
