    Efren Gonzalez

Watch Watercolor Magic at Casa de la Noche

Efren Gonzalez will transform a blank canvas into a complete painting using watercolor technique during a live demo on November 18, 3:30 – 6:00 pm. Also on display will be Efren’s original art and the art of his students.

This event culminates a weeklong watercolor painting class* offered at Casa de la Noche, and Gonzalez’s participation in the International Plein Air Watercolor Competition held in San Miguel this weekend.

*Last-minute registration for Efren’s watercolor workshop is available for this 4 all-day class beginning Tuesday at 9 AM. Contact Casa de la Noche for more information.

Efren Gonzalez resides in Ajijic, his birthplace, with his family in a home he built entirely from the sales of his paintings. For years he struggled with the dream of living and supporting his family through his art. Born in 1972, this impassioned local talent started experimenting as soon as he could hold a pencil. He grew up in Ajijic, winning local and regional competitions at an early age. Efren started out studying architecture and the Plastic Arts but soon found he didn’t have the patience for either. After working in various jobs while always painting, Efren was offered a small grant to study Art at a small college in Maryland. He stayed a year and made the most of this opportunity by personally viewing many great works only previously seen in books.

A prodigious painter in all media; watercolor, oil, pastel, and acrylic, he continues to hone his skills by taking classes from other painting masters with oil and watercolor being his preferred medium. His paintings are intensely alive, full of color and meaning and they give great insight into the Mexican spirit. His paintings depict everyday life capturing all the colors and people of his beloved Mexico. He is equally well known as a muralist having completed his first intricate mural in the 90s for his hometown of Ajijic. He also teaches painting workshops in many locales throughout Mexico and has had his work permanently exhibited in Puerto Vallarta. He has recently traveled to the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and France painting, teaching, and exhibiting his work.

In addition to his demo, offered with no charge, Efren will display paintings for sale and donate a proportion of all sales to local charities. Signups for his next class (oil medium) offered in January will be available. Limited openings are available.

An exhibit of his work and his student’s work will be held at the Bordello Galeria, Casa de la Noche at 3:30 PM, on Friday, November 18th. This one-day event will be held on the upper terrace of the Bordello Galeria, located at Organos 19, ½ block off Hernandez Macias.

Join us Friday: See a master at work!
